Peschanaya Bay is a natural monument situated 80 km from Listvyanka village. You can get to Peschanaya Bay only by a cutter boat chartered at Listvyanka, the travel time is about 5 hours, or by passenger hydrofoil from Irkutsk (on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays), travel time is about 4 hours. The latter is more economical.
Peschanaya Bay is rather a well-known place at Baikal; it is notable by its stilt root trees, the amount of sunny days and the beauty of landscapes. The water washes away and the wind blows away the sand from under the trees, so their roots are situated on the surface, not in the ground. The amount of sunny days at Peschanaya Bay can be compared with the amount of sunny days at the Black Sea.
The bay is surrounded by pyramid-like rocks: Smaller Chapel 60 m. high, and Bigger Chapel 80 m. high. The clean sandy beach of the bay has semi-oval shape; it is 750 meters long and 15-20 meters wide.
Peschanaya Bay is called “Siberian Riviera”. The average annual temperature is + 0.4 °C. This is the only place in East Siberia where the average annual temperature above zero. But the water temperature at Peschanaya Bay is rather low and the water is too cold for bathing. In May and June when the ice melts the water is very clear and you can see the bottom of the lake at 40 meters depth. Ledum (marsh tea) blossoms at this time making the bay coastline purple.
The warmest and most suitable for holiday at Peschanaya Bay time is July and August. In September the nature of Peschanaya Bay becomes even more beautiful showing all the colours of Indian Summer.
